The issue in Terrigal is the local landmark “The Skillion”. The Skillion is a large hill on the coastline of Terrigal with a steep cliff facing the ocean and it provides a vast view across the ocean and the local area. The Skillion is made up of sandstone, which is a sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rock is rock that has formed from sediment deposited by water or air. The problem here is that the constant waves that are smashing against the sandstone wall of The Skillion have caused the rock to erode and has created an indent in the rock wall.
In recent years The Skillion has undergone rehabilitation by the local city council. The council ‘landscaped’ The Skillion for safety reasons due to people complaining that the rocks would fall onto people walking past below. The council used dynamite to try and blow some of the rock wall apart to prevent anything falling in the future, But the Public didn’t like this idea and it became controversial due to the high costs that were involved. The public also complained that they were tampering with a tourist attraction. There are now sings underneath the rock wall stating that you are unable to walk past a certain point.
